First

Before you ring anyone

Locked out right now?

  1. Check every door and window you can reach safely, back door included.
  2. Think who has a spare key: family, a neighbour, your landlord, agent or management company.
  3. If a child or someone vulnerable is inside, or something is on the cooker, ring 112 or 999 first.
  4. Send the form and pick Now. Say if it's a uPVC door, a Yale-type latch or a mortice lock.

How it's done

Getting in without breaking the lock

Most lockouts are opened without damage. On a Yale-type night latch that's often quick. On a locked mortice deadlock or a uPVC door locked with the key, it takes longer, and the locksmith may tell you the lock has to be drilled and replaced. If so, agree the price for the new lock before they start.

Tell the locksmith on the phone what kind of door it is, whether it was locked with the key or just pulled shut, and whether the key is inside in the lock. It changes what they bring.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to get back into my house?

Two Dublin locksmiths list a lockout at €68 (Locksmiths Dublin) and €95 (Locksmiths.ie). Guides put it at €80–€180 including VAT (Emergency Trade) and €80–€190 (typical €120) in the daytime (Handld).

Will they need to prove I live there?

Expect to be asked. A careful locksmith checks that you're entitled to get in, for example with ID and a bill or post at the address, before or after opening the door.

I rent. Who do I ring?

Your landlord, agent or management company first: they may have a spare key. 28% of Swords households rent (CSO Census 2022). If no one can come, send the form.

Can a uPVC door be opened without damage?

Often, yes. If the multipoint mechanism has failed inside the door, it may need a new gearbox, which runs from €145 on Workily's guide. See uPVC door locks.

How fast will someone come?

We don't promise a time. We pass your request to one local locksmith who covers your area, and the locksmith rings you to talk through the job and when they can come. If you're locked out, pick Now in the form.
