- Key turns but the handle won't lift, or lifts and drops back: the gearbox or a broken spring.
- Handle goes down, door stays shut: the gearbox has failed with the bolts thrown. The door needs opening without damage, then a new gearbox.

Why does my uPVC door handle go down but the door won't open?
Usually the gearbox inside the door, behind the handle, has broken. The bolts stay thrown. A locksmith can often open it and fit a new gearbox rather than a whole lock.
The door only locks if I slam it or lift hard.
The door has dropped or the keeps on the frame are out of line, and the bolts are rubbing. An adjustment caught early is cheaper than a gearbox that breaks under the strain.
Can I just change the cylinder?
If the key is stiff but the handle works, often yes. If the handle is loose or won't lift, the problem is the mechanism, not the cylinder.
Is a composite door the same?
Mostly. Composite doors use the same kind of multipoint locks and euro cylinders as uPVC ones.
